6 Reasons to Cultivate a Devotion to the Precious Blood

During the month of July, the Church calls us to deepen our love and devotion to the Precious Blood of Christ. Instituted as a feast by Pope Pius IX in 1849, this devotion is as ancient as the Church itself, originating from the blood and water that flowed from Christ's side on the cross—a moment symbolizing the birth of the Church.

Here are six compelling reasons to embrace this profound devotion:

1. Sensitivity to Sin
In a culture that often normalizes and trivializes sin, devotion to the Precious Blood restores our sensitivity to its gravity. This devotion brings clarity to the destructive nature of sin and inspires sorrow and reparation—not only for our own sins but for those of the whole world.

James 4:7 admonishes us to "Resist the devil, and he will take flight." Yet society often fails to resist, succumbing instead to the allure of sin. Devotion to the Precious Blood strengthens our conscience, encouraging us to flee from sin and seek refuge in the Sacrament of Confession, where the Precious Blood cleanses us anew.

2. Gratitude for His Love and Mercy
Contemplating the Precious Blood moves our hearts to gratitude for Christ's ultimate sacrifice. From His pierced side flowed the Blood and water that gave birth to the Church and redeemed the world—a profound testament to divine love and mercy.

This love is a grace freely given, not something we could ever earn. Devotion to the Precious Blood helps us accept this unfathomable gift with gratitude, drawing us closer to God and reconciling us to Him and to one another.

3. Generosity of Spirit
The Precious Blood, a supreme symbol of Divine Love, calls us to emulate Christ’s selflessness. It challenges us to extend forgiveness, patience, and charity to others, recognizing that we are all sinners redeemed by the same Blood.

This devotion softens our hearts, helping us resist the prideful temptation to judge others harshly. It reminds us that only Jesus and His Blessed Mother are sinless, inspiring us to reflect His generosity of spirit in our own lives.

4. Atonement for Sins and Openness to Grace
Devotion to the Precious Blood is a powerful means of atoning for sin and opening our hearts to grace. Each time we participate in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass, we are united with Christ’s offering on the cross.

In the Eucharistic Sacrifice, the priest re-presents the offering of Christ’s Body and Blood, applying its fruits to our lives. Through this act, we are nourished spiritually and drawn deeper into the covenant of redemption. Devotion to the Precious Blood expresses our desire to be washed clean, restored, and transformed into living sacrifices, united with the Mystical Body of Christ.

5. Spiritual Protection
The Precious Blood is a source of unparalleled spiritual protection. As St. Peter reminds us, "You were ransomed...with the precious blood of Christ" (1 Peter 1:18-19). This devotion fortifies us against spiritual dangers, shielding us with the very Blood that redeemed the world.

Scripture affirms the power of the Precious Blood repeatedly. At the Last Supper, Jesus declared that His Blood would be poured out for the remission of sins and as the seal of the new and eternal covenant. When we invoke the Precious Blood, we call upon its strength and protection, a spiritual weapon unlike any other.

6. Brotherly Love
The Precious Blood, shed for the salvation of all, unites us in Christ’s mission of redemption. It calls us to acknowledge our shared humanity and work for peace and reconciliation in a world so often divided.

Blessed Pope John XXIII emphasized that devotion to the Precious Blood fosters harmony among individuals, communities, and nations. By embracing this devotion, we allow the grace of Christ’s sacrifice to strengthen the bonds of brotherly love and transform society into one more worthy of God and His creation.

Precious Blood of Jesus, save us and the whole world!

Let the Sacred Tradition, Scripture, and the example of the saints inspire us to embrace this timeless devotion. Through the Precious Blood, may we grow in holiness, deepen our faith, and bring Christ’s love to a world in need of redemption.
